MUNRO/JOHNSTON
Have been search for 33 years for the origins of a maternal great-grandfather,
Martin MUNRO; born c. 1821 in Ontario.
- Can document him from 1847 on when he married Margaret Elizabeth JOHNSTON,
assumed daughter of Thomas JOHNSTON and Nancy ALBRANT, by Rev. James Elliott of the Wesleyan Methodist Church.
- Witnesses were Thomas JOHNSTON and John JOHNSTON.
- In 1849, he bought the south half of Lot 17, Con. 5 of Mountain
Township, Dundas County, Ontario, from Alexander Sir Hector MUNRO and lived there until his death in January 1877.
- There is no record of his death and his obituary in the Morrisburg newspaper
is only a poem to his good character.
- He is buried across the road from his homestead in Knight's Burying Ground,
Lot 17, Conc. 4.
- He attended Van Camp Church, Lot 13, Conc. 5, of Mountain and, in 1874, was one of the signing Trustees of the
Methodist Episcopal Church when they bought Knight's Burying Ground.
- Baptismal records for the church cannot be found.
- Martin's children born 1848-1872 were, in order of birth: Nancy (md George Marshall), Thomas (Frances? Barkley?),
Isabella (Thomas Badger), Mary Ann (Robert M Bouck), Eliza Jane (Neil McIntyre), Martha (John Ezra Lapoint),
Alice Maud (Thomas H Baldwin), William (Charlotte E Bouck), M John (a bachelor), Sarah (Rufus Irvine), and Lorenzo (Ida May SHAVER), my grandfather.
- According to the 1851-52 Census, there were other Munros in the area: Solomon, age 45; Alexander H, 40; and George, 38.
Martin, being age 32 at the time, could be a brother to these.
- Have often wondered if there is a connection to Mary MEDDOUGH, daughter of Martin MIDDOUGH, who married John MUNRO of
Matilda Township, Dundas County, or to Andrew SPIES, whose daughter Elizabeth, married William MUNRO.
- Have begun a radius search of Lot 17, Conc. 5, of Mountain but am now deterred by health and time. The only result
so far is that a Thomas JOHNSTON, presumeably Martin's father-in-law, owned an adjoining lot at one point.

and listed the names on them (most are identified).

SHIPMAN
A SCHUPPMANN (SCHUCHMAN, SCHOECKMAN, SCHUBMAN) family came to New York from
Palatines via England in 1710 under the New York Naval Stores Project.
- The history from Paul SHIPMAN (b. 1756 in NJ, d. 1825
in St. Catharines) back to this SCHUPPMANN family seems well proven.
- My problem is to connect my SHIPMAN family to this Paul SHIPMAN.
- I relate to another Paul SHIPMAN (b. 1810 US) who married
Mary (b. 1811, d. 1843 - buried in Hunter Hoodless Cemetery).
- They had four children: Elizabeth (b. 1835); Phoebe Ann (b. 1837);
Robert Henry (b. 1841 - St. Catharines, d. 1917 - my gg grandfather) and Martha (b. 1842).
- When Mary died, Paul married Helen (or Ellen?) BOYLE (could be
DYLE or BYLE) in 1845 in Brantford. Helen seemed to be from Hamilton.
- They had at least 7 children: Margaret H. (b. 1846); Melinda J. (b. 1849);
Mary (b. 1859); Henryetta (b. 1861); Josepha (b. 1863); Idda Ann (b. 1865) and John (b. 1867).
- I am still looking for Paul in the 1861 census to see if he had more
children.
- I think Paul SHIPMAN (b. 1810) was the son of John Bond SHIPMAN (b. 1781, d. 1825) who was
in turn the son of Paul SHIPMAN (b. 1756, d. 1825), but that is the connection I am trying to prove.
- This Paul SHIPMAN (b. 1756, d. 1825) was one of the founders of St. Catharines, formerly
called Shipman Corners.
- Does anyone know anything about this family, particularly John Bond SHIPMAN?
- The Paul SHIPMAN (b. 1810) family seems to have lived in Brantford in 1852
(cannot find in 1861 census yet) and then in Beverly in Wentworth North in 1871. Paul (b. 1810) was a farmer.

FORD
Seeking information on the families of brothers John and Thomas, who came to Canada and settled in Brant Co.
- John FORD, his wife Clara and daughters Nancy and Fannie sailed from
England in 1834 or 1835. They came to Brantford.
- Three more children - Charlie, Emmie and Susan - were born in Brant Co.
- After a few years, the family moved to Bruce Co. where Charles died a
young man.
- The family then moved to Middlesex Co. and bought 25 acres near Belmont.
- John sold his home to his son-in-law and moved to Dunwich, Elgin Co.,
near Cowal, where he died.
- In 1836, Thomas FORD (b.c. 1815), of Goring, Sussex, Englnad, and his wife
Eliza WHITE (b. 1818 Goring), sailed for Canada on thier wedding trip.
- They arrived at John's place in Brantford.
- Thomas and John, along with son-in-law George MILES, each received
a grant of ten acres of land.
- This land lay where the eastern half of the city of Brantford
is now.
- They moved from that land, but stayed in the area and worked as
labourers.
- Thomas and Eliza had nine children: William, Henry, Thomas, Annie
(my gg grandmother who married Robert Henry SHIPMAN), Peter, Harriet, Sarah Jane, George and John.
- Thomas and Eliza were living in Brantford. Thomas may have worked
at Brantford Carriage Works.
- Hope to hear from anyone with info about Thomas and his family, such as where he and Eliza
are buried, when they died, info about Brantford Carriage Works, info about John's family and info on land ganrts for Brantford.

MCDONALD/MACDONAND and FAIR
My great grandfather, Donald McDONALD, came from the Isle of Skye, likely in the 1860s.
- He came to New York, then to Canada, settling in the Brantford
area or near Cainsville.
- The family later moved to Huron County.
- We have no record of his death date. He was buried in Trowbridge
Cemetery in Perth County and all records are lost.
- My gr-grandmother, Mary McLEOD, came from Inverness.
- She was first married to Mr. GILLIES. She later married my
gr-grandfather and they raised the Gillies girls. Mary died in 1915.
- When I was a boy in the 1930s, my grandfather would have his cousin
- Mrs. FAIR - come to visit.
- The daughters would bring their mother up to Grey Township and
she and grandpa would have a great visit.
- The Fairs had one son, James or Jimmy Fair, who lived on the
Caledonia Line.
- I wonder if some of the daughters' children might still live
in the Brantford area.
- I do not know what any of the daughters' married names were,
but I believe there were a number of daughters in the Fair family.
- Any information welcome.
